Illustrative design. Import your own PDF to check its editable elements.

Your PDF. Your template. Your next variant.

  1. Download your design as PDF.

In Canva, open Share → Download. Choose PDF Standard or PDF Print, select the pages you need and download the file. In the newer download menu, choose PDF and the Digital or Print preset.

Leave “Flatten PDF” off in Advanced Settings if the option appears. The importer needs the original text and shapes, rather than a single flattened image.

  2. Import the file in Pikstrapi.

Sign in, open Templates and select Import Canva PDF. Choose your file, optionally name the new template, then import it and open the editor.

Import creates a new template. Your other templates stay in place, and the PDF’s pages are kept in order.

  3. Review and name your layers.

Compare the result with your PDF. Edit supported text and adjust shapes. Select the text that should change and set its Name property to title. Give each changing layer a unique name and save the template.

These names are the keys you will send inside layers. Import does not infer which parts of your design should become dynamic.

  4. Send data. Generate a variant.

Open the API playground, choose your imported template and copy its UUID. Send the new title in a JSON request, or map your spreadsheet columns for CSV generation.

Your imported design becomes your next API request.

Use your imported template UUID and the layer name you saved. The example changes title and returns the PNG bytes in immediate mode. In deferred mode, a job and webhook separate rendering from delivery.

Replace the example ID with your own template UUID. Save title as the unique layer name before calling the API.

The design is ready. Now put your data to work.

Reuse your existing visual work for a campaign, a course or your next publication. You choose what changes; the template keeps the layout.

Check your design once. Reuse it with confidence.

Text, images and vector shapes can be recovered as editable objects when the PDF preserves them in a supported form. Import is a starting point: special effects, complex clipping or flattened content may need adjustments. Some unsupported elements can be missing.

After changing copy, check font appearance and text length. Embedded fonts can contain only the original characters, so new letters or symbols may use a substitute font.

File limits: up to 10 MB and 20 pages, with the same page dimensions and no password protection.

How does this differ from Canva Autofill?

Canva’s own Autofill API is available to users on Pro, Teams and Enterprise; access was expanded in September 2026. It works within Canva through an authenticated app with OAuth permissions. This Pikstrapi workflow starts with a PDF you download and a new template you import into your Pikstrapi account.

Questions before your first import.

Does it work with Canva Free?

Yes. Export your design as PDF Standard or PDF Print and import that file in Pikstrapi. This workflow does not require Canva Pro or SVG export. Canva may require payment if your design uses premium elements. Pikstrapi has its own plans and usage allowances.

Can I edit every element?

The importer recovers compatible text, images and vector shapes as editable objects. The result depends on the PDF: flattened text, special effects, clipping and complex groups may differ or be missing. Review the imported design before generating variants.

Can I paste a Canva link or sync my account?

Import uses a PDF file you download from Canva and upload to Pikstrapi. There is no account connection or automatic sync. To bring later Canva changes across, download a new PDF and import it as a new template.

Are the original fonts preserved?

Compatible fonts embedded in the PDF are kept with the template. A PDF can contain only the characters used in the original design. New characters may use a substitute font, so check long names, accents and new copy after editing.

Can I import a design with several pages?

Yes, up to 20 pages in a PDF of up to 10 MB. All pages must have the same dimensions. Password-protected PDFs are not supported. Import creates a new template with its pages in order.
